In 1998, Jody Elff began creating a series of
audio installation works. Since then, these works have developed into an
exploration of how ambient sonic energy can be used as a palette to draw
from in the pursuit of new audible textures, in addition to an
examination of our awareness of space through audible information.
As technology becomes increasingly
sophisticated, our ability to compile the data inherent in any given
phenomenon increases; by analyzing the existing sounds in a particular
environment for variations in tone and volume, a wealth of data is made
available. This data is then utilized to create a new set of audible
events that is re-introduced into the environment. Because none of the
resulting sonic combinations are pre-recorded, each instant of the
experience is unique. In each installation, the presence and action of
every observer has a direct influence on the behavior of the piece.
